Part of Rolling out technology across stores
Training store teams before a multi-site launch
Prepare store colleagues, managers and support contacts for a technology launch with role-based practice and task checks.
Train each store team on the task it will perform, the exceptions it may face and the help route available on its launch shift. A product demonstration can introduce the system, but readiness means colleagues can complete their own work and recognise when to stop or escalate.
Build training around roles
List the actions required from a store colleague, shift manager and support contact in the proposed configuration. A colleague may need to find a current stock answer; a manager may need to resolve a mismatch; support may need the store, device and symptom. Teach the controls and decisions each role actually owns.
For each role, answer four questions: what starts the task; what a correct result looks like; what can go wrong; and who owns the next step.
Include what staff should tell a shopper when information is uncertain. A stock indication should not become a promise that an item is on the shelf.
| Role | Practice task |
|---|---|
| Store colleague | Complete the usual task, correct a mistaken input and explain an unavailable result. |
| Shift manager | Take over an unresolved case, check the governing record and arrange an approved workaround. |
| Support contact | Identify the store and device, capture the symptom and route the case to its owner. |
Make practice available before launch
Give staff access to the equipment or a training setup that represents the live workflow. Show the task, then let each participant complete it and talk through an exception. Slides can explain a process, but they do not show whether someone can find a control or interpret a confusing result.
Include colleagues on opening, closing and weekend shifts where their work differs. Name who will train anyone who misses the first session. Keep a brief current instruction where staff can find it, and replace it when the workflow changes.
Explain why the process is changing and ask store teams where it conflicts with trading work. Australian business guidance recommends explaining the reason for change and involving staff early.
Check readiness through the task
Use an agreed task check for each relevant role. Record who completed it, the configuration used, any help needed and unresolved questions. Attendance alone does not show task completion. Rehearse a handover or customer interruption if it affects the work.
Before go-live, confirm that the help desk or supplier understands the new workflow and the store's support route. Practise reporting a representative fault so staff know what information to provide. Record this as a rehearsal, not proof of future response or repair time.
If a critical role has not been prepared, hold that role's use of the tool or provide an approved on-shift alternative until the gap is closed. After launch, use questions and errors from early stores to revise the instruction before later waves receive it.
